Karel Janssens is a counsel in the Brussels office of Crowell & Moring and has been a member of the Brussels Bar since 2006. He focuses on (i) IT, media and telecommunications, (ii) privacy and data protection, and (iii) consumer protection and unfair commercial practices.

Karel’s experience includes day to day counseling of clients in the telecom, media, retail, and pharmaceutical sectors. He advises national and international companies on the telecom regulatory framework and assists them in setting up and operating their businesses in Belgium and the EU. Karel also has a particular focus on all internet-related issues such as e-commerce, online direct marketing, and ISP liability for third-party infringements. He advises companies on privacy and data protection legislation, and has been closely monitoring the comprehensive reform of EU data protection rules. In addition, his work for media companies and involvement in complex proceedings relating to the Belgian cable TV market has provided him with an extensive knowledge of media legislation.

To complement his ICT practice, Karel has developed a particular understanding of consumer protection law and unfair commercial practices. He regularly advises and litigates in relation to comparative and misleading advertising, sales promotions, games of chance, and distance selling. He also advises clients from the pharmaceutical sector on the marketing and advertising of medicinal products and medical devices.

Karel is a qualified lawyer in Belgium and regularly represents clients before national courts and regulatory bodies. He obtained his law degree at the University of Leuven (KUL) in 2004. He studied for a year in France at the Université de Montesquieu IV in Bordeaux, and he completed a master's degree, magna cum laude, in international and European law at the Free University of Brussels (VUB) in 2005. After working with a niche Brussels law firm specializing in IP and TMT, Karel joined Crowell & Moring in 2007.

Karel is fluent in Dutch, English, and French.
