John Vogel

Senior Counsel

Overview

John Vogel is a senior counsel and member of the Corporate Group in Crowell & Moring's Washington, D.C. office. John represents U.S. and foreign companies in conventional and Islamic equity and debt public and private financing transactions involving real estate investment, leasing and infrastructure projects, as well as restructurings, privatizations, project financings, and domestic and cross-border joint ventures and commercial contracts. He has represented sovereign wealth funds in the direct and indirect acquisition, management, and disposition of U.S. real property, and in connection with the liquidation in over 40 countries of one of the world's largest international banks following its collapse.

John is president and chairman of the board of the Fulbright Association, the U.S. alumni organization of over 100,000 Fulbright Scholarship recipients. He has taught Islamic finance at the University of Pennsylvania Law School and Georgetown Law School, and he has spoken on international panels and written extensively on the subject of Islamic finance. John was recognized by the Finance Monthly Law Awards 2017 as Islamic finance lawyer of the year for the U.S.

Representative Matters

  • Represented a Middle Eastern sovereign wealth fund in structuring and negotiating the acquisition of over $3 billion of U.S. real property.
  • Represented Farm Credit Banks in the issuance and sale of over $2 billion of debentures and preferred stock.
  • Represented a sovereign wealth fund as the largest shareholder and unsecured creditor in the bankruptcy of Bank of Credit and Commerce International, at the time the world's largest bank collapse.
  • Represented various U.S.-domiciled companies in the sale and purchase of tax credits and other tax benefits having an aggregate value in excess of $3 billion.
  • Represented electric utility cooperatives in the sale-leaseback of plants and equipment having a value exceeding $2 billion.
  • Represented an international agribusiness company and other transnational entities in the negotiation and drafting of joint venture/investment agreements in over 30 countries.
