J. Bradford Anwyll is a senior counsel in Crowell & Moring’s Tax Group, representing clients in tax controversy and litigation matters involving federal and international issues, with a particular focus on transfer pricing and other cross-border disputes.

A seasoned tax litigator with more than 35 years of experience, Mr. Anwyll has litigated more than 30 cases before the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, federal district courts, and U.S. Courts of Appeals on behalf of corporations and partnerships. He has also represented clients in more than 275 administrative proceedings before the Internal Revenue Service’s Examination Division, Appeals Office, and Advance Pricing & Mutual Agreement Program. 

Mr. Anwyll’s representations have involved a wide variety of substantive and procedural issues including transfer pricing, foreign tax credits, Subpart F,  debt versus equity, financial transactions and instruments, accounting methods, R&D credits, bad debt/worthless stock deductions, capitalization/depreciation, structured transactions, judicial doctrines (such as the economic substance, substance-over form, business purpose, step transaction, and sham transaction doctrines), the assignment-of-income doctrine, the claim-of right doctrine, equitable estoppel, the mitigation provisions, summonses, adequate disclosure, statutes of limitations, formal and informal refund claims, privilege and work product, interest, and penalties, among other issues.

Previously in his career, Mr. Anwyll was a principal at a Big 4 accounting firm and a law clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
