Fred S. Souk is a retired partner of the Washington, D.C. office and a founding member of the firm. He received a B.S. in political science
in 1967 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an M.S.W. from the
University of Maryland in 1969. In 1975, he earned a J.D. from The George Washington
University, where he was a member of the Law Review and Order of the Coif.
Fred's practice encompassed product liability litigation, insurance coverage
litigation, and general civil litigation. He handled and tried cases in numerous
state and federal courts around the country. He assisted several Fortune 100
corporations in coordinating litigation on national and regional levels and in developing
strategies for defense and resolution of multi-state litigation, including nationwide
class actions. He also provided liability prevention counseling to a number of product
manufacturers.
Fred served frequently as a mediator or arbitrator in state and federal civil cases.
For a number of years, he conducted training sessions for practicing lawyers and
sitting judges in the District of Columbia on how to be an effective mediator or
arbitrator. In 2003, under the auspices of the International Judicial Academy and
the U.S. Department of State, Fred was one of the lead trainers in a four-week
training program on mediation techniques conducted in Washington, D.C. and in Romania for trial judges, appellate judges, Ministry of Justice officials, and practicing
attorneys from Romania.
Prior to joining Crowell & Moring, Fred was a law clerk to the Honorable Edward Northrop, Chief Judge, U.S. District Court, District of Maryland. Prior to that, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Leo D. Welch, Chairman, National Arbitration Panel.
Before attending law school, Fred was a medical social worker at Los Angeles County/U.S.C. Medical Center in Los Angeles, California and at D.C. General Hospital
in Washington, D.C. He served as a VISTA Volunteer in Baltimore, Maryland in 1967-68.
Fred was the co-author of a treatise on product liability law and authored or
co-authored numerous articles on product liability law, insurance law, and civil litigation. He also was the author of a book of poetry and artwork, and several of his
poems have been published in poetry anthologies.
