Flip Petillion is a litigation partner in Crowell & Moring's Brussels office where he practices in the Intellectual Property and International Dispute Resolution & Arbitration groups.

Intellectual Property

Flip Petillion leads the Brussels Trademark Practice and is co-chair of the firm's TLDs & Domain Names Practice. Flip focuses on copyright, trademarks, domain names, domains, and unfair competition. He is involved in the contentious/enforcement side, as well as in the advice part of the practice, including licensing, advertising clearance, IP-driven transactional work, and strategic advice. He is also a highly acclaimed panellist and arbitrator in different international forums. Flip regularly lectures on various topics and teaches at the Beneluxstichting Beroepsopleiding Merken en Modellengemachtigden (BBMM), a foundation that is supervised by the Benelux Association of Trademark and Design Law (BMM). He is also a frequent speaker at professional and academic conferences and has published several articles relating to intellectual property. He edits a yearly overview of IP case law.

With more than 25 years of experience, Flip's practice has been devoted to corporate clients in industries such as hardware and software developers, film producers and distributors, advertising agencies, architects, authors and performers, financial institutions, insurance companies, automotive businesses, and diamond traders.

International Dispute Resolution & Arbitration

Flip is a leading domestic and international negotiator, litigator, and arbitrator. He has been handling arbitrations for more than 25 years.

Flip has served as chairman, sole arbitrator, and party-appointed arbitrator, and he has also acted as counsel in arbitration proceedings under the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC, Paris, France), the International Dispute Resolution Center (ICDR, New York, NY, U.S.), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO, Geneva, Switzerland), the International Trademark Association (New York, NY, U.S.), the National Arbitration Forum (Minneapolis, MN, U.S.), the Czech Arbitration Court (CAC, Prague, Czech Republic), the Nederlands Arbitrage Instituut (NAI, Rotterdam, the Netherlands), and the Belgian Mediation and Arbitration Center (CEPANI, Brussels, Belgium). In addition, Flip has worked in ICSID arbitrations.

In view of the impressive nature and number of clients and matters he has handled over the past three years, as well as the landmark cases that he was asked to handle for many leading Internet companies, Flip has shown to be the leading individual in the international litigation related to Internet governance and accountability. He has been representing a long list of top multinational brand holders.

Flip regularly acts as a counsel and arbitrator in technology-related international arbitrations.

Legal Education

Flip received his J.D. from K.U. Leuven University, magna cum laude, in 1987. In 1987, he became an assistant professor in international law at the K.U. Leuven University. Flip also obtained several postgraduates in international economic law, Dubrovnik University, 1988; in telecommunications law, K.U.Leuven University, 1998; in telecommunications, strategy, and regulation, Ghent University, 1999. He trained with CEPANI (2006) and WIPO (2007 and 2008) to become an official mediator.
