Christian Dekoninck is a trial lawyer focusing on intellectual property and media and advertising law. He works with clients in a wide range of industry sectors, but has particular experience in pharmaceutical, media and entertainment and the automotive industry. Christian is recommended by Legal 500, received a 2018 Lexology Client Choice Award, and was named a "Life Sciences Star" in the 2014 LMG Life Sciences Europe Report. According to World Trademark Review 1000 (2018), Christian is also highly ranked and "has a broad business perspective and comes up with inventive solutions to problems. Prior to joining Crowell & Moring in 2010, Christian worked in the intellectual property department of other major firms, focusing on patent, trademark and unfair competition law. He has worked for leading companies in the luxury goods market as well as in the pharmaceutical industry.


Christian has extensive experience in (multinational) infringement litigation relating to patents, copyrights, trademarks, and design rights. Representative matters include:

  • Representing generic pharmaceutical companies in infringement proceedings and related proceedings (seizure proceedings, preliminary injunction proceedings).
  • Representing an international industrial company in a patent infringement case, one of the first accelerated proceedings on the merits in Belgium relating to a patent.
  • Representing an international dredging company in a complex patent litigation, involving proceedings before civil and administrative courts.
  • Representing a well-known manufacturer of oral hygiene products in a trademark infringement case.
  • Representing a major Belgian financial institution in an infringement case relating to a world famous trademark.


Christian also has significant experience in IP issues specific to the life sciences industry, such as the interface between IP and regulatory issues. Representative matters include:

    • Representing generic pharmaceutical companies in proceedings relating to supplementary protection certificates.
    • Advising pharmaceutical companies on freedom to operate (FTO) issues.
    • Advising on orphan drug designations and data exclusivity.


    Christian also regularly advises clients on marketing issues, including the marketing of medicinal products and medical devices, advising clients related on unfair competition, comparative advertising and consumer protection. Representative matters include:

    • Assisting a Belgian independent advertising agency with the development and protection of (interactive) campaigns that have won international awards.
    • Representing an international insurer against a trade association of brokers in injunction proceedings regarding online insurance selling.
    • Advising a number of international companies on the marketing of medical devices, medicinal products and food supplements.
    • Representing a journalist against a well-known politician in a high profile liability case.
    • Assisting clients in drafting and negotiating publishing agreements.

    Clients also call upon Christian for the drafting and negotiation of licenses, technology transfer agreements and R&D cooperation agreements, e.g. with universities.

    Christian is a qualified lawyer and received a law degree at the Catholic University of Leuven in 1999. He also obtained a master of laws (LL.M) in intellectual property law at the Catholic University of Brussels in 2001. Christian is admitted at the Brussels Bar since 2001.

    Christian’s trademark related practice has been recognized by the World Trademark Review 1000. He is listed as a leading trademark professional and has been described variously as: having "a broad business perspective" and coming up with "inventive solutions to problems" (2018); "percipient" and a "favoured advocate of pre-eminent players in industries as diverse as media and life sciences" (2017); a "strong trial lawyer" (2016); and as having "amassed a wealth of contentious expertise; the veteran court performer has first-hand experience of pretty every kind of dispute imaginable" (2015).
