Three Crowell & Moring Partners Named National Law Journal's M&A and Antitrust Trailblazers

Washington, D.C. – October 7, 2015: Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce that three partners, Kent A. Gardiner, Wm. Randolph Smith, and Daniel A. Sasse, have been named to National Law Journal's 2015 Mergers & Acquisitions and Antitrust Trailblazers. This list honors lawyers who have "moved the needle in mergers & acquisitions and antitrust law; recognizing excellence in deal making, restructuring and financing."

The publication recognized Gardiner, a partner in Crowell & Moring's Litigation and Antitrust groups, as a trailblazer and notes that he "pioneered the practice of litigating antitrust matters on behalf of corporate plaintiffs." Gardiner comments, "When I started, there were class action plaintiffs lawyers, but no one for corporations that found themselves periodically wronged, often by pricing overcharges or other fraudulent conduct." Gardiner litigates antitrust and other complex cases, and represents clients in grand jury investigations and other proceedings before the DOJ. He also represents corporations that have been injured by pricing overcharges or other fraudulent conduct, to help them fulfill their obligations to shareholders to recover those assets.

The National Law Journal honored Smith, a partner and chair of the firm's Antitrust Group, for his accomplishments in telecommunications, where he has had "a string of industry-changing deals," including serving as lead antitrust counsel for AT&T's $67 billion acquisition of DIRECTV. He has served as outside antitrust counsel for AT&T for decades and for other companies, including DuPont, Alcoa, and United Technologies. Smith notes, "We are in the midst of a technical and regulatory revolution that is having a major impact on the information economy" and "It's made it very interesting to grow up with the people at those companies and to have contributed to how they have evolved and reinvented themselves."

As noted by the National Law Journal, Sasse, a partner in Crowell & Moring's Orange County office and a member of the firm's Management Board, was the firm's first antitrust attorney "west of the Beltway." He earned his ranking as a trailblazer for his plaintiff-side antitrust work on behalf of corporate clients, including AT&T, DuPont, and General Motors. Sasse notes, "Over the years, we've returned about $1 billion to at least four dozen different clients and also helped them to compete more effectively in their marketplaces on behalf of their employees and customers."
