National Law Journal Names Crowell & Moring Partner Flip Petillion to 2017 "IP Trailblazers" List

Brussels – July 17, 2017: Crowell & Moring is pleased to announce that Brussels partner Flip Petillion has been named to the National Law Journal’s 2017 list of “Intellectual Property Trailblazers.” The list profiles lawyers who have made significant marks in the patent, copyright, trademark, and trade secret law arenas. Petillion leads the Brussels Trademark Practice and is co-chair of Crowell & Moring’s TLDs & Domain Names practice.

The National Law Journal highlighted Petillion’s more than 20 years of work involving internet domain names, including advising on the very first domain name case in Europe. “I was the first to handle cases through an arbitrator,” Petillion told NLJ. “It is because of my involvement in the domain name business that I got involved in the top-level domain business, such as .org or .gov.” Petillion has gone on to represent more than 100 organizations in applications and challenges to the rulings of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers when ICANN declines to grant extensions. He also recently co-authored a book on ICANN, “Competing for the Internet.”

Looking ahead, Petillion expects a new round of domain name extensions where any interested party can apply, including individuals. He also noted that many organizations are interested in extensions as a way to help ward off malware and ransomware attacks.
