New York – July 24, 2017: Crowell & Moring is pleased to announce that Juan A. Arteaga, the former Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Enforcement at the U.S. Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division, has joined the firm’s New York office as a partner in its global Antitrust Group. With 15 years of legal and policy experience, Arteaga will advise clients on a broad range of civil and criminal antitrust matters, including litigation, merger enforcement, and government investigations. As an experienced litigator, Arteaga will also represent clients in complex commercial litigation, including class actions, securities and shareholder litigation, and international arbitrations.

“Juan's government leadership and experience navigating civil merger investigations and other antitrust investigations through the Department of Justice will be a great asset to our clients,” said Angela B. Styles, chair of Crowell & Moring. “His experience will refresh and bolster the firm's already deep Antitrust Group bench.”

Arteaga served in the Antitrust Division for nearly four years, during a period when the agency achieved unprecedented success in civil and criminal enforcement. As Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Enforcement, he oversaw merger and anticompetitive conduct investigations in a broad range of industries, including the financial services, telecommunications, energy, consumer products, and aviation industries. He worked on numerous high-profile merger and non-merger investigations and litigations, including US Airways/American Airlines, Halliburton/Baker Hughes, Electrolux/General Electric, and National CineMedia/Screenvision. Before becoming Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Arteaga served as Chief of Staff and Senior Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General, where he advised on enforcement decisions, developed and implemented policy initiatives, and worked with the Justice Department’s leadership offices.

“Juan has represented Fortune 500 companies and financial institutions on complex, ‘bet the company’ litigations and investigations,” said Jason C. Murray, co-chair of the firm’s Antitrust Group. “His experience representing financial institutions, coupled with his presence in New York, will make him a trusted counselor to investment banks, private equity firms, and hedge funds in matters before the competition agencies and in court.”

Arteaga’s practice will also focus on providing antitrust and litigation counsel to Latin American companies requiring representation in the U.S., as well as U.S. companies requiring representation in Latin American jurisdictions. He has significant international arbitration experience and will also work closely with the firm's International Dispute Resolution Group.

“Juan's addition to Crowell & Moring's New York office is part of the firm's strategic investment in growing its New York presence and commitment toward further expanding our top-tier antitrust and financial services litigation practices in a key market with important clients,” said Glen G. McGorty, managing partner of Crowell & Moring's New York office.

Arteaga said: “It’s a privilege and honor to be joining Crowell & Moring’s preeminent Antitrust Group. I look forward to helping the firm and group continue to grow as the destination practice that sophisticated clients turn to with their most important and complex antitrust matters. I also look forward to working in New York alongside partners Dan Zelenko and Olivier Antoine to help advise clients in the financial services and other industries as they navigate their antitrust issues in the U.S. and abroad.”

Arteaga is on the advisory board of Legal Outreach, a nonprofit organization that provides educational resources to youth in underserved communities in New York City. He received his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was managing editor of the Columbia Law Review and a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, and his B.A., magna cum laude, from Boston College. He was a law clerk to Judge Roger L. Gregory of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
