Washington, D.C. - October 24, 2008: Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce that Teresa Stanek Rea, partner in the firm's Intellectual Property Group, has been elected as president to the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA). Rea will assume the leadership position during the annual AIPLA conference in Washington, D.C., October 23 - 25, 2008. She succeeds James Pooley, partner with the law firm Morrison & Foerster LLP.

"We live in a time of rather dramatic change and intellectual property law is consistent with that trend. We are likely to see dramatic changes in case law, legislation and rule implementation by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The AIPLA will continue its programs in education and advocacy to focus on positive change. The AIPLA believes in a strong patent system both domestically and internationally and we will continue to work with leaders here and abroad to achieve economic benefit," said Rea.

"Terry is one of the great leaders in the field of intellectual property law. I have known and enjoyed working with her for over a decade and have always appreciated her innovative work as our careers have crossed paths. Her commitment to, and strong background in, the field of intellectual property will help advance the mission of AIPLA in meaningful ways and I look forward to working with her in her new role as AIPLA president," said Q. Todd Dickinson, Executive Director of AIPLA and former Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Rea focuses her private practice on complex patent litigation and inter partes matters, as well as patent procurement and portfolio management, including patent preparation and prosecution. She is a former pharmacist who has corporate experience as a patent attorney for a multinational chemical company. She has extensive experience in drafting infringement and validity opinions and licensing matters. A resident in Crowell & Moring's Washington, D.C. office, she obtained her law degree from Wayne State University and her undergraduate degree in pharmacy from University of Michigan.

Crowell & Moring LLP's Intellectual Property Group has recently been ranked in Chambers USA, Chambers Global, Legal 500 US, and Legal 500 EMEA.
