Crowell & Moring's Susan Hoffman Elected President of D.C. Bar Foundation
Washington, D.C. – July 20, 2015: Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce that Washington, D.C.-based Public Service Partner Susan M. Hoffman has been elected president of the D.C. Bar Foundation, the largest funder of civil legal services programs in the District. Since joining the Foundation's board in 2011, she has served as its vice president and chaired the Development Committee. Hoffman is the second Crowell & Moring partner to take on this important leadership role.
As Public Service Partner at Crowell & Moring, Hoffman promotes, supervises and participates in the pro bono work performed by the firm's attorneys. The pro bono work of the firm ranges from representation of the homeless, elderly individuals and immigrants to assisting domestic violence victims in obtaining protection orders to "impact" and appellate litigation. Hoffman also serves as president of the Crowell & Moring Foundation, a separate nonprofit organization.
Hoffman's life's work has been dedicated to improving access to justice for all individuals, regardless of income and in promoting pro bono work as a means of closing the "justice gap." Her legacy also includes laying the foundation to improve how volunteer legal services are assessed and delivered to the poor and underserved. She is a pioneer in public interest law and advocacy, and has inspired leadership and passion for pro bono work within her own firm and beyond.
Hoffman has blazed a trail for many others with a legal career that is highlighted by a number of "firsts." She was first person to be hired as a full-time public service counsel at a Washington, D.C.-based law firm, and later became the first, full-time public service partner whose sole responsibility is to lead the firm's pro bono practice. Over the last two decades, Hoffman has been a warrior for the disenfranchised and underserved, fighting to improve access to legal services for the marginalized and unrepresented. In the process, she has helped establish and pave the way for other successful pro bono programs throughout the country. She is a champion of pro bono causes and pioneer of innovative solutions that literally raise the bar in the pro bono arena.
Established in 1977, the mission of the D.C. Bar Foundation is to fund, support, and improve legal representation of the poor, vulnerable, and otherwise disadvantaged in the District of Columbia. It is committed to the vision that residents of the District have equal access to justice, regardless of income.
