Crowell & Moring’s Mitchell L. Rabinowitz Named an American Lawyer 'Dealmaker of the Year'

Partner recognized for role in world’s largest blockchain investment to date

Washington – March 28, 2018: Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce that Mitchell L. Rabinowitz, a partner in the firm’s Corporate Group and member of its Management Board, has been named a 2018 Dealmaker of the Year by The American Lawyer. The list features 17 lawyers who worked on “the deals that mattered most in 2017” while demonstrating creativity, client commitment, and business savvy to deliver on their clients’ objectives.

Rabinowitz was recognized for his work shepherding a landmark international FinTech deal, in which more than 40 leading financial institutions spanning 15 countries invested $107 million in the recently formed distributed ledger technology (DLT) company, R3. The deal marks the world’s largest DLT/blockchain investment to date.

Rabinowitz was instrumental in helping to structure and negotiate a unique IP framework to which an initial set of nine banks agreed upon; this structure and approach enabled the initial consortium to quickly grow to more than 40 banks worldwide. The DLT/blockchain investment required delicate negotiations with scores of bank investors from across the world over a 10-month span.

R3 is leveraging the investment to build “an operating system for financial markets using a distributed ledger platform—also known as a blockchain—called Corda,” The American Lawyer reports. “Using distributed ledgers, banks can eliminate the need for a middleman in transactions between them, which is cost-effective and allows for faster transactions.”

Rabinowitz’s practice focuses on U.S. and international transactional matters, with deep and extensive experience in the financial services industry and, in particular, FinTech and market structure transactions within the industry. For more than 20 years, he has helped emerging and leading institutions in the financial services industry to launch, build, jointly create, invest in, and acquire and sell businesses built at the industry’s intersection with technology, and that are intended to impact the structure of the financial markets, solve for inefficiencies in the markets, and/or respond to the ever-changing regulatory environment.

“This was the absolute highlight of my career, so far,” Rabinowitz said of the R3 investment to The American Lawyer. “To be involved in such a groundbreaking consortium, to have a global investor base of the world’s most sophisticated banks … to be involved with the cutting-edge technology that is on everybody’s lips.”
