Crowell & Moring's Janet Levine Receives Prestigious ABA Criminal Justice Charles R. English Award
Washington, D.C. - August 10, 2009: Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce that Los Angeles-based partner Janet Levine, member of the firm's White Collar & Securities Litigation Group, has received the American Bar Association (ABA) Criminal Justice Section Charles R. English Award. The award is bestowed on judges, prosecutors, the defense bar, academics, and other attorneys who are members of the ABA Criminal Justice Section and have distinguished themselves by their work in the field of criminal justice. Levine received the award during the ABA's 2009 annual meeting in Chicago, July 31, 2009.
According to Jack Hanna, director of the ABA's Criminal Justice Section, Levine was chosen to receive this award for many reasons, including her contributions to the Section's Upjohn Task Force; efforts to recruit young lawyers, minority lawyers, and female lawyers to become actively involved in both the White Collar Crime Committee and the Section; and work to secure sponsorship dollars and donations for the Section's Spring and Fall conferences.
Levine joins an esteemed group of past recipients of this award including: Terence F. MacCarthy (2000), Neal Sonnett (2001), Michael Th. Johnson (2002), Hon. Andrew Sonner (2003), Prof. Stephen Saltzburg (2004), Albert Krieger (2005), Raymond Banoun (2006), Guantanamo Military Commissions Military Defense Counsel (2007), and Michael S. Pasano (2008).
In selecting Levine, the Award Committee determined that she met the following criteria: (1) exemplified ethical and professional conduct; (2) provided exceptional service to the Criminal Justice Section; (3) engaged in activities that have increased the stature and professionalism of lawyers who practice in the criminal justice system; and (4) enhanced the relationship between prosecutors and defense bar by setting an example that subordinates parochial defense bar and prosecution views in both professional and bar association endeavors in favor of achieving a result that promotes fairness and justice.
Levine is an experienced trial and appellate attorney, with extensive experience in espionage, securities, health care, tax and public corruption matters. She has represented politicians, judges, and licensed professionals in myriad industries, providing defenses against governmental accusations of wrongdoing. Her clients are local, national, and international and include individuals, entities, and government organizations. She brings wide-ranging trial experience as well as extensive expertise in pretrial resolutions of difficult and sensitive matters, including litigating grand jury matters.
Levine is the co-chair of the ABA's White Collar Crime Committee, and a past-chair of the ABA's West Coast Regional Subcommittee on White Collar Crime. In June 2009, Levine was selected by the Daily Journal, considered to be California's largest print and online legal news provider, as a finalist in their search for the 2009 "Top Women Litigators."
