Crowell & Moring's Janet Levine Named Among the Daily Journal's "Top Women Lawyers"
Washington, D.C. – April 29, 2016: Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce that Janet Levine, a Los Angeles-based partner and chair of the firm's Trial Practice, has been named to the Daily Journal's 2016 "Top Women Lawyers" list. This marks the eighth consecutive year Levine was included in the prestigious California ranking, which recognizes the achievements of leading women in the state.
Levine was recognized by the Daily Journal for leading "headline grabbing matters from espionage to Foreign Corrupt Practices Act cases." Levine defended one of the largest suppliers and distributors of food products to the U.S. government in parallel civil and criminal investigations, and a sealed qui tam action, in the Central District of California. The publication noted that "The stakes were high and the magnitude of potential penalties and collateral consequence made this a 'bet the company' matter. Besides the threat to the company, the individuals faced personal financial liability and imprisonment." Levine negotiated a deferred prosecution agreement for the company and a complete pass on prosecution for all current employees, including the owner. After a trial lasting over five weeks, she obtained a dismissal with prejudice of all charges against her client based on prosecutorial misconduct (United States v. Aguilar, 10-1031(A)-AHM, U.S. District Court, Central District of California). She is one of the few lawyers to ever try a Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) case.
Levine is a trial and appellate attorney, with extensive experience in securities, health care, and tax fraud and all manner of public corruption matters. She has represented corporations, politicians, judges, directors, officers, and executives and licensed professionals in myriad industries, providing defenses against allegations of wrongdoing. Levine brings extensive trial, grand jury, and pretrial experience, as well as extensive pre-filing resolutions of difficult and sensitive matters, including litigating grand jury matters.
Levine is a past chair of the American Bar Association's Criminal Justice Section and remains on the Criminal Justice Section Council, the Section's policy-making and advisory board. She is a past co-chair of the American Bar Association's White Collar Crime Committee and a past-chair of the American Bar Association's West Coast Regional Subcommittee on White Collar Crime. She also maintains a leadership role in the International Bar Association's Business Crime Committee.
