Crowell & Moring Partner Teresa Stanek Rea Tapped to Serve as an Interim Director of Newly Created Patent Trial and Appeal Board Bar Association

Washington, D.C. – September 22, 2016: Teresa "Terry" Stanek Rea, a partner in Crowell & Moring LLP’s Intellectual Property Group and the former acting and deputy director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), has been appointed to serve as an interim director of the newly created Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) Bar Association. The PTAB recently launched the bar association with the collaboration of more than 45 law firms, including Crowell & Moring. The bar association aims to promote the highest professional and ethical standards among lawyers and stakeholders who appear before the PTAB.

The PTAB Bar Association is incorporated in Virginia and based in Washington, D.C. The PTAB Bar Association has been organized to provide a forum for communications between the legal community and PTAB officials and its Administrative Patent Judges (APJs), particularly to share best practices and stay abreast of the rule making, procedure and jurisprudence emanating from the PTAB. In addition to providing a forum for communications between the PTAB and practitioners, the Association also will coordinate many other important functions, such as PTAB-centric continuing legal education, pro bono opportunities, career enhancement, and scholarship activities.

Rea is a recognized authority on intellectual property law who has advised on IP issues in the public and private sectors. She led the USPTO through the implementation of the America Invents Act, and she served as deputy undersecretary of commerce for intellectual property. A licensed pharmacist and attorney, she is also the former president of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

In addition to serving as a Crowell & Moring partner, she is a director with C&M International, the international trade and investment consulting firm affiliated with Crowell & Moring.

Rea will be among 15 PTAB interim directors. She will serve in that role until a general election takes place at the first conference of the PTAB Bar Association on March 1-2, 2017 in Washington. For additional details, please visit
