Crowell & Moring Partner Teresa Stanek Rea Named Law360 "Icon of IP"
Washington, D.C. – June 7, 2016: Crowell & Moring is pleased to announce that Washington, D.C.-based Intellectual Property Group partner Teresa Stanek Rea has been named one of Law360’s “Top 25 Icons of IP.” The new series by the national legal media outlet profiles those who have shaped today’s intellectual property landscape, as selected by a panel of Law360 editors and IP lawyers.
Law360 noted Rea’s leadership in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), where she served as deputy director and, later, acting director. During her nearly three-year tenure, she played a central role in implementing the America Invents Act, the landmark legislation to overhaul the nation’s patent system that President Obama signed into law in 2011. The law incorporated reforms to the patent application process, and Rea’s duties included leading the implementation of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.
“I thought when they passed it, I would be a member of private practice, and I would offer input and criticism to the government,” Rea told Law360. “Lo and behold, it did surprise me when I got there that I would work with … the entire team at the USPTO on what would turn out to be a tsunami of implementation.”
Rea joined Crowell & Moring in 2008, and returned to the firm in 2013 after her service at the USPTO. She has also served as a director with C&M International, Crowell & Moring’s international trade and investment consultant. Additionally, she has been president of the American Intellectual Property Law Association. Rea studied pharmacy at the University of Michigan, and earned her J.D. from Wayne State University in Detroit.
