Crowell & Moring Partner Stuart H. Newberger Named a National Law Journal 2017 Litigation Trailblazer

Washington – November 3, 2017: Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce that Stuart H. Newberger, a partner in the firm’s Litigation and International Dispute Resolution groups, has been named to the National Law Journal’s 2017 list of Litigation Trailblazers. The list features 25 lawyers who have “helped make a difference in the fight for justice” and achieved notable litigation successes throughout their careers.

The National Law Journal profiled Newberger’s longtime practice of representing victims of state-sponsored terrorism, which Newberger described as “the most important part of my overall international practice.” After he served as an assistant U.S. attorney, Newberger’s nearly three-decade career in private practice began with pro bono cases against the State Department and CIA and his representation of American journalist and former hostage, Terry Anderson, in a Freedom of Information Act matter. He also represented the families of seven victims of UTA Flight 772, which was destroyed over the African desert in 1989 by a suitcase bomb planted by Libyan agents. Newberger recently authored a book, “The Forgotten Flight,” about the long fight for the UTA 772 victims’ families to obtain justice. His efforts over the decades resulted in a summary judgment for the families in 2007.

In 2015, Newberger and others at Crowell & Moring worked with Congress to pass the Justice for Victims of State Sponsored Terrorism Act, and this year, his clients were able to benefit from the Victim Compensation Fund that was established. Earlier this year, Newberger helped achieve a federal appellate victory on behalf of victims of terror in a multi-billion-dollar lawsuit against Sudan. The ruling upheld much of a lower-court decision that was originally handed down in 2014. Newberger is currently finalizing the case, and said he wants to “make sure that Sudan makes a commitment as part of normalization that any final judgments will be resolved.”
