3 Matters Shortlisted For Global Finance Deal Of The Year And Global Litigation/Dispute Resolution Of The Year

Washington – September 21, 2018: Crowell & Moring is pleased to announce that it has been named a finalist in The American Lawyer’s Global Legal Awards for its role in three significant matters. The firm was shortlisted for “Global Finance Deal of the Year” for its work in securing a historic FinTech investment, and for its restructuring work for global auto-safety manufacturer Key Safety Systems. In addition, the firm was shortlisted in the “Global Litigation/Dispute Resolution of the Year” category for its efforts in representing victims of the 1998 U.S. Embassy bombings in Africa.

The firm was selected as a finalist for the “Global Finance Deal of the Year” award for its work, led by partner Mitchell L. Rabinowitz, on a deal that brought together more than 40 global financial institutions and others from around the world to invest $107 million in the recently formed FinTech innovator R3. The 2017 deal marked the world’s largest distributed ledger technology (DLT)/blockchain investment to date. R3 is the largest consortium of global financial institutions collaborating to develop a DLT platform, with a shareholder base from more than 15 countries. The firm also was shortlisted in the global finance deal category for its work devising and executing a broad government relations strategy that helped Key Safety Systems to secure federal approvals to purchase bankrupt global air-bag maker Takata Corp. The firm secured approvals from the Justice Department, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States. The firm also coordinated Key’s engagement with lawmakers on Capitol Hill, including testimony before an oversight committee, about the merits of the deal, which went through earlier this year.

The firm was shortlisted for the “Global Litigation/Dispute Resolution of the Year” category for achieving significant success for victims of terror and their families. In July 2017, the firm helped to secure a major appellate win for the families of 11 Americans killed in the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania, as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit upheld a $680 million judgment against the Sudan government. Earlier in 2017, more than 2,000 claimants received their first payouts – totaling more than $1 billion – from the U.S. Victims of State Sponsored Terror Fund, a congressionally mandated fund that Crowell & Moring partner Stuart H. Newberger and others at the firm had petitioned Congress to establish to compensate victims of state-sponsored terrorism.

The annual Global Legal Awards honor work that recognize the complex international legal issues that firms face and overcome for clients on a daily basis. The winners will be announced at an awards gala on December 5 in New York.

No aspect of this advertisement has been approved by the Bars of, or any courts in, the jurisdictions in which the lawyers are admitted to practice.
