Crowell & Moring Antitrust Co-Chair Shari Ross Lahlou Named Global Competition Review's 2018 "Litigator of the Year"

Washington – April 11, 2018: Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce that Shari Ross Lahlou, co-chair of the firm’s Antitrust Group, has been named Global Competition Review’s 2018 “Litigator of the Year” in the publication’s annual GCR Awards. Lahlou was one of eight finalists in the category that recognizes “a competition litigator whose superior technical skill, practical judgment and excellence in serving clients in court in 2017 demonstrate that he or she is among the very best in the field.”

GCR recognized Lahlou for her significant victories in 2017, in which she successfully defended on appeal two significant pre-trial wins and defeated class certification in a notable price-fixing multidistrict litigation. Lahlou served as lead counsel for DuPont in a price-fixing case that Valspar brought against DuPont alleging $525 million in damages, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit affirmed a grant of summary judgment to DuPont. This precedent-setting case clarified the appropriate standard for assessing evidence at the summary judgment stage in price-fixing cases. Additionally, the Tenth Circuit affirmed a summary judgment ruling for Lahlou’s client Owens & Minor in a suit brought by competitor Suture Express alleging antitrust claims in connection with bundling and seeking more than $1 billion in damages.

Lahlou was also recognized for her representation of CSX Transportation, Inc., in which a federal court denied class certification to shippers in a price-fixing suit brought against the Class I railroads alleging nearly $20 billion in damages. GCR recognized this matter as a finalist in the “Litigation of the year – Cartel defence” category. In addition, Lahlou served as trial counsel for and led the team defending Humana in a case brought by the Department of Justice to enjoin the company’s $39 billion proposed merger with Aetna.

GCR editors selected the finalists in each category, and readers voted on the winners. Lahlou's full profile can be viewed here.
