Virginia State Bar 68th Annual Meeting

The Annual meeting traditionally includes numerous programs being sponsored by our sections, committees, and related organizations, in combination with a variety of social events, and this year will be no exception. As always, this meeting will offer a unique opportunity for you to spend leisure time with family, stay abreast of current legal and professional issues, and socialize with your colleagues, all in the relaxed setting of Virginia Beach.
Karen A. Gould, of Richmond, will be sworn in by Justice Elizabeth B. Lacy as the 68th President of the Virginia State Bar at the Banquet on Friday evening, June 16. The featured speaker for the Banquet will be Gene R. Nichol, President of the College of William & Mary. This year’s CLE offerings will be highlighted by a Showcase program sponsored by the Young Lawyers Conference on Friday morning, June 16, featuring a panel discussion entitled,A Roberts and Alito High Court: The Effect on Long Standing Precedent and Developing Areas of Law.
The Young Lawyers Conference also is planning its usual wide variety of events, including its Membership Reception on Friday, at which time the Young Lawyer of the Year award will be presented. In addition, the YLC will host the Run in the Sun and Volleyball Tournaments, as well as the dance following the Banquet. The State Bar also is hosting the Second Annual Golf Tournament on Thursday, June 15, open to Annual Meeting registrants and Expo exhibitors. The Senior Lawyers Conference will sponsor an interesting and timely CLE program on Friday afternoon, June 16.
The Conference also will host a special luncheon on Saturday afternoon in honor of this year’s 50-Year Award recipients. The Conference of Local Bar Associations will host its Annual Meeting for Local Bar Leaders and Conference Representatives on Friday morning, June 16.
The CLBA will present its Awards of Merit and Local Bar Leader of the Year award during the breakfast. On Saturday morning, June 17, the State Bar and Virginia CLE will present the play, Clarence Darrow: Crimes, Causes and the Courtroom featuring Graham Thatcher in the role of the famous trial lawyer. Graham Thatcher’s performance is exceptional, incorporating Darrow’s wit and humor, as well as his strong opinions regarding social issues of the day. Spouses and guests are welcome for this provocative and entertaining program. The General Practice Section will sponsor the 19th Annual Lawyers Expo from Thursday through Saturday.
Michael Jacobs will be a co-presenter of an Intellectual Property/Corporate Counsel discussion entitled, Mining Diamonds in Your Basement – Finding and Managing Corporate Intellectual Property Assetswith Ross D. Vincenti, Esq., Senior Counsel with Sprint Nextel Corporation, as part of the CLE Conference taking place during the annual meeting.
