ICANN Fires the Starting Gun for New gTLD Applications

June 20, 2011

This morning, the implementation of the New gTLD program has been approved by the ICANN Board in Singapore. The Board set a three-month filing window for applications for new generic Top Level Domains, including "brand TLDs."

Interested parties can now move forward to prepare their applications for filing between January 12, 2012 and April 12, 2012. The list of applications will be published at the end of April 2012. The initial evaluation results will likely be published in November 2012. Beforehand, interested parties, such as brand owners, will be able to file objections. As a practical matter, actual roll-out of the new gTLDs will be possible beginning in 2013, at the earliest.

ICANN's May 2011 version of the Applicant Guidebook will apply to the new applications, subject to some new conditions.

Crowell & Moring's TLD and Domain Name Group has been providing practical guidance for brand owners and potential applicants as the ICANN process has developed.
