DOE Invests Again in AI

On October 2, 2019, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced that its Office of Science will fund a new research center for artificial intelligence (AI), the Center for ARtificial Intelligence-focused ARchitectures and Algorithms (ARIAA) with the goal of developing “core technologies important for the application of AI to DOE mission priorities, such as cybersecurity and electric grid resilience.” DOE is planning to spend $5.5 million to allow three artificial intelligence powerhouses each with a unique expertise to partner to drive the research. Specifically, ARIAA will combine Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s (PNNL’s) expertise in power grid simulation, chemistry, and cybersecurity, with Sandia National Laboratory’s (Sandia’s) software expertise, with the Georgia Institute of Technology’s (Georgia Tech’s) expertise in creating custom accelerators for machine learning.

Secretary of Energy Rick Perry also announced that the DOE would also provide $50 million for other AI research and development projects. Thus, it appears that the DOE is committed to developing and adopting AI solutions, consistent with President Trump’s February 2019 Executive Order on Maintaining American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence.
