Copyright in the Digital Age: The Current State of Affairs

October 13, 2020 • Webinar

Starts: 12:00 PM (CEST)
Ends: 2:00 PM (CEST)

With the start of the digital age far behind us, the EU finally decided that the time was ripe to modernize its copyright framework legislation. The directive that was adopted in April 2019 on copyright and related rights in the Digital Single Market (2019/790) is Europe’s attempt to “make sure that consumers and creators can make the most of the digital world.”

During this webinar, we will first explain the basic concepts and principles of EU and Belgian copyright law. We will then address the law’s application to the challenges our society currently faces, with a particular focus on the digital age: How to cope with copyrighted content in an online context, on social media, video platforms, for political campaigns or in your instant messaging-group among colleagues? How to adequately protect software and databases, which are becoming increasingly important and valuable?

These, as well as other questions that arise because of our unprecedented accessibility to copyrighted materials, will be tackled in this presentation. Finally, we will not only provide the theoretical responses to these questions. We will take a practical approach, giving insights into how legal counsel can solve their copyright challenges in this online context.

Are you looking for an in depth presentation on the new Copyright Directive, please note that this is the more basic webinar. The deep dive into the new copyright framework will take place on 12 October 2020.
