Background - Careers (Lawyers) 2016

Our associates and counsel are an integral part of Crowell & Moring and play an important role in the firm’s continued growth and ability to effectively serve our clients. With the support of our Professional Development team, we strive to provide our attorneys with the opportunity to achieve their maximum individual potential through thoughtful and meaningful training programs, mentoring and effective feedback. Our goal is to empower our attorneys to develop as practitioners and build successful careers.

Orientation & Integration

Each fall, our new class of associates attends an orientation designed to assist recent law school graduates with the transition from law school to the formal practice of law. It is an opportunity for our new associates to meet other members of their class; gain a greater understanding of both the firm as a whole and our expectations of associates; and learn more about available firm resources. We also bring all new lateral partner, counsel and associate hires to our Washington, D.C. office for a fulsome orientation program that further assists with their successful integration into the firm.

Training

Our focused training programs give our associates and counsel the knowledge and skills they need to become leaders in their chosen practice areas. In addition to providing firmwide critical skills training programs focused on writing and presentation skills and business development planning, our practice groups offer training to enhance the subject matter proficiency of our attorneys at all levels. Our hallmark annual training program, Trial Excellence Academy, is designed to train and test the best and brightest among our rising litigators. The week-long experiential and time-intensive course format allows for participants to get ample time on their feet and real-time feedback. Each year, the program is led by an experienced cadre of trial lawyer instructors from throughout our U.S. offices. The program culminates in mock trials held in a D.C. federal courtroom.

Mentoring

Crowell & Moring is committed to maintaining a supportive environment in which learning, professional development and feedback are a continuous and valued process. Upon their arrival at the firm, all of our associates and counsel are assigned Professional Development Advisors (PDAs). Our PDAs are partners who provide mentoring and guidance to help navigate the challenges of practicing and identify and support each person’s individual needs and path to success. We encourage continued frequent interaction between our pairings with monthly mentoring reminders that offer interesting articles about mentorships, career development, and/or relationship development to spark discussion.

Evaluations & Career Management

Crowell & Moring’s annual evaluation process, which is conducted by our Lawyer Development Committee, provides associates and counsel with feedback on their progress with our firmwide competencies and practice group benchmarks. Our Professional Development team is integrally involved in this process to ensure that the feedback is timely, candid, meaningful, and constructive.

We are committed to building a supportive culture at the firm, and providing career development assistance beyond our formal evaluation processes. Our Professional Development Counselor provides strategic career development counseling, coaching and support to our associates and counsel regarding the full range of their development needs including staffing, performance objectives, and the creation of individual development plans.
