Background - About (History)

Crowell & Moring was founded in 1979 by 53 lawyers who left a large national firm to begin a different kind of law firm. Since then, we've grown to approximately 550 lawyers in Brussels, Doha, London, Los Angeles, New York, Orange County, San Francisco, Shanghai, and Washington, D.C. And we've created some impressive milestones along the way.

The London and Orange County offices are established.

The firm receives the “D.C. Pro Bono Firm of the Year Award” for the second time in three years.

Rosemary Collyer becomes chair – the first woman to lead a major Washington, D.C. law firm. In 2003, she was named a U.S. District judge for the District of Columbia.

The Brussels office is established.

Strengthening its already renowned commitment to pro bono, Crowell & Moring becomes the first DC-based firm to elect a full-time public service partner, Susie Hoffman.
