Rob Murray is a partner in the Crowell & Moring's Antitrust Group. He is based in London and focuses on antitrust dispute resolution, acting primarily for claimants but also for defendants. He is part of the firm's Recovery practice in Europe, which pursues antitrust, international trade, and IPR claims.

Recent cases, whilst European managing partner of a leading US Plaintiff firm specialising in international anti-trust, include the ground-breaking £73.5m settlement of cartel damages claims of UK and US purchasers of long haul air passenger services with British Airways plc and Virgin Atlantic Limited (and the action in the English High Court, Emerald Supplies v British Airways plc in relation to cartel damages claims arising in the air cargo services sector). Rob is a former Reporting Panel Member of the UK Competition Commission (2005-2007) involved in three merger decisions, British Salt/New Cheshire Salt Works, Heinz/HP, and Svitzer/Adsteam.

Prior to that Rob gained extensive experience in a number of leading law firms in London and Brussels. His work has included:

  • representing clients in a wide variety of investigations by European and national competition authorities and in relation to corporate and commercial transactions
  • representing exporters and importers in EU customs, anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations and in relation to quotas, preferential tariffs and other international trade law issues
  • a broad counselling practice with particular experience of the maritime and aviation, telecommunications and the internet, consumer and retail sectors
  • advising and representing clients in high value commercial contract negotiations
  • a variety of major legal risk management projects

Rob was a Scholar at Exeter College and was awarded an MA (Hons) in Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford in 1985. He also has an LLM, magna cum laude, in International and Comparative Law from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (1987). Rob qualified as a Solicitor with Clifford Chance in 1989 and is a member of the Law Society of England and Wales.

Rob is currently a guest tutor with the International and European Law LLM programme at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where he teaches a course on private competition litigation in the EU, and also contributes to the LLM programmes led by Professor Alan Riley at the City University Law School, London. He was a technical editor of the major recent text Competition Law; European Community Practice and Procedure published by Sweet & Maxwell/Thomson in 2008. Rob has spoken at conferences and seminars throughout Europe, Asia and in the US, South America, and Africa.
