John Macleod is a founding partner of Crowell & Moring and the former chairman of the firm. He is also a past chair of the firm's Environment & Natural Resources Group.
John has represented clients in a variety of environmental and commercial matters, with a particularized focus during the last decade on endangered species and clean water issues. He argued the landmark Sweet Home case in the United States Supreme Court, and has represented developers, water providers, and agriculture, timber and mining interests throughout the country in litigating and arbitrating environmental disputes. John also has significant experience arbitrating and mediating commercial disputes and disputes involving law firms and lawyers. He is a member of CPR's Washington, DC Panel of Distinguished Neutral Arbitrators. He has long been active in law firm management, both at his own firm and as an advisor to others.
John obtained his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Notre Dame, and served as Editor-in-Chief of the Notre Dame Law Review. He has been a Trustee of the Energy and Mineral Law Foundation since its creation and is a past recipient of the National Mining Association's prestigious "Distinguished Mining Lawyer" award. He is listed in Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in American Law, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, several U.S. Courts of Appeals, and in the District of Columbia.
