Michael V. Blumenthal is a partner in the firm's New York office and is a member of the Financial Services practice, concentrating his practice in creditors' rights and insolvency matters. He has extensive experience negotiating and litigating the issues pertinent to financially troubled corporations, portfolios, and assets, and is routinely involved in restructurings, divestitures, and acquisitions, and serving the needs of financial institutions, indenture trustees, investors, and official creditors' committees.
In the course of his career, Mr. Blumenthal has provided legal representation in a number of complex cases and transactions on behalf of institutions and publicly traded companies throughout the United States. Among Mr. Blumenthal's more noteworthy engagements are those involving Sharon Steel, Frontier Airlines, Scott Cable, Caldors, K-Mart, Adelphia, General Electric Capital Corporation, NBC/Universal, R. D. Management Group Victor Posner, and professional football player Michael Vick.
Mr. Blumenthal also has extensive experience in commercial real estate finance, representing institutions such as General Electric Capital Corporation, and an array of real estate entrepreneurs in connection with the restructuring and reorganization of office buildings, shopping centers, and hospitality projects.

- A large financial institution in connection with numerous Chapter 11 cases involving office buildings, shopping centers, and other real estate interests in the Northeast.
- The Official Bondholders' Committee in connection with the confirmation of a Chapter 11 plan of liquidation of a large manufacturing company based in Alabama.
- A world-leading media and entertainment company in connection with its interests in numerous Chapter 11 and 7 cases, including the defense of avoidance actions, prosecution of claims, and the negotiation and documentation of contracts and other agreements.
- Official committees of unsecured creditors in connection with Chapter 11 cases involving debtors engaged in manufacturing, dietary supplements, and travel related businesses.
- Major lessors of real property in connection with various Chapter 11 cases of retailers nationwide.
- Special litigation counsel to debtors in connection with the investigation and prosecution of fraudulent conveyance claims involving valuation of telecom assets.
- Founders of a multi-billion dollar telecommunications company in connection with their defense of claims and actions totaling in excess of $3.0 billion, resulting in one of the largest federal government shareholder settlements in history.
- Bankruptcy counsel for Michael Vick, the professional football player, in his Chapter 11 case.
Michael received his B.A. degree, magna cum laude, from the State University of New York at Albany in 1972. He earned his JD degree from the University of Miami School of Law in 1975. Michael is also a member of the New York State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the American Bankruptcy Institute, and the Turnaround Management Association. In addition, Michael frequently speaks on topics relating to bankruptcy and restructuring issues. He is admitted to practice in New York. Michael has been selected by his peers as a New York Metro Super Lawyer in the Bankruptcy & Creditor/Debtor Rights category continuously since 2006.
