Alexandre de Gramont is a partner in the firm and vice-chair of the International Arbitration Practice. Resident in the firm's Washington, D.C. office, he specializes in both International Arbitration and Litigation.
International Arbitration. Mr. de Gramont has represented clients in a wide variety of international commercial arbitration and investor-state arbitration matters. The cases he has handled arise both from arbitration clauses in commercial contracts, as well as from bilateral investment treaties (BITs), multilateral investment treaties (such as NAFTA, CAFTA-DR, and the Energy Charter Treaty), and other international investment laws. He has represented companies as well as governments in disputes arising from transactions in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North, Central and South America, and Africa. He has experience with many of the leading arbitral fora in the world, including, for example, the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC), and the International Centre For Dispute Resolution (ICDR) of the American Arbitration Association (AAA). He has also handled ad hoc arbitration under UNCITRAL and other rules. Mr. de Gramont regularly counsels investors and governments on the structuring of investments so as to minimize investment risk under international investment treaties and other international investment laws. He has been listed in Chambers USA, The Best Lawyers in America, Washington D.C.'s Best Lawyers, and The International Who's Who of Commercial Arbitration as one of the leading international arbitration specialists in the United States.
International Litigation. Mr. de Gramont has also handled a wide range of international litigation, including cross-border disputes and litigation pending in multiple countries. He has also tried cases and argued appeals in state and federal courts across the United States. Mr. de Gramont also has far-ranging experience and expertise in the various issues that typically arise in international litigation, including issues of forum and jurisdiction, international discovery and the taking of evidence abroad, foreign sovereign immunity, and the enforcement of arbitration clauses and awards.
Mr. de Gramont received his undergraduate degree in History, Philosophy, and Literature from Wesleyan University in 1986 and his law degree from New York University in 1990. In addition to writing and speaking about various legal issues, Mr. de Gramont is also the translator and editor of a volume of Albert Camus's journalism, entitled Between Hell and Reason: Essays from the French Resistance Newspaper Combat, 1944-47 (University Press of New England).
