Crowell & Moring Continues Significant Expansion of Energy and Corporate Practices with Addition of Attorney Trio

Firm News | 3 min read | 07.30.13

Washington, D.C. – July 30, 2013: Crowell & Moring LLP continues to grow its national Environment, Energy & Resources and Corporate groups with the addition of three attorneys from Dickstein Shapiro LLP. The new additions include partner Richard Lehfeldt and senior counsel Irving B. Yoskowitz in Washington, D.C., and counsel Laura Szabo in New York.

Lehfeldt, Yoskowitz, and Szabo arrive on the heels of the six-member team of colleagues who joined Crowell & Moring from Dickstein Shapiro earlier this month, including: partners Larry F. Eisenstat, Patrick W. Lynch, and Jonathan C. Odell; senior policy advisor Patricia M. Alexander; counsel Deborah A. Carpentier; and associate Diana A. Jeschke.

For more than two decades, Lehfeldt has developed a unique portfolio of experiences in the public and private sectors. He served for six years as senior vice president, external affairs, for TECO Energy, Inc. where he was responsible for TECO's regulatory affairs, federal and state governmental relations, and corporate communications. Before that, he was vice president and assistant general counsel at Edison Mission Energy. He also worked in the U.S. House of Representatives as counsel to the Energy and Power Subcommittee of the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee, serving as lead counsel on all matters pertaining to the federal regulation of the electricity industry.

In his practice, he counsels clients, including electric power plant developers and owners, through all phases of project development, operations and regulatory compliance. He also advises clients on large-scale and complex transactions including acquisitions, sales, joint ventures and divestitures, and financing of energy assets. Lehfeldt is particularly adept in creating "first of a kind" frameworks for large-scale energy infrastructure projects. He has extensive experience in the electricity industry, including regulatory and environmental law, corporate communications, and federal and state legislation.

"We are thrilled to welcome Richard, Irv, and Laura to the firm. Their substantial skills, which include a comprehensive understanding of the energy market, corporate transactional expertise, and in-depth knowledge of federal and state regulations, further complement and build upon the existing capabilities we offer our clients in this space," said Scott L. Winkelman, partner and co-chair of Crowell & Moring's Environment, Energy & Resources Group. "As we welcome our newest colleagues to the firm, we are making another significant step toward realizing our strategic goal of creating one of the most esteemed energy practices in the country."

Lehfeldt said, "The U.S. energy industry is at a crossroads. Our energy infrastructure is aging, and needs new resources to meet growth and environmental objectives, but the roadmap for meeting those objectives does not yet exist. We look forward to working with the deep bench of talent at Crowell & Moring who supplement the capabilities of our practice with topflight expertise in tax, government contracts, environmental law, regulatory compliance, intellectual property, and other necessary counsel critical to supporting our clients' energy infrastructure projects."

Crowell & Moring's Environment, Energy & Resources Group is comprised of nearly 50 attorneys who work from the firm's offices in Washington, D.C., New York, California, Alaska, and Wyoming. In 2011, the Group was joined by former Wyoming Governor Dave Freudenthal, expanding its capabilities in environmental regulation, mining, and energy policy and law.

Crowell & Moring LLP is an international law firm with approximately 500 lawyers representing clients in litigation and arbitration, regulatory, and transactional matters. The firm is widely recognized for its representation of Fortune 500 companies in high-stakes litigation, as well as its ongoing commitment to pro bono service and diversity. The firm has offices in Washington, D.C., New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Orange County, Anchorage, London, and Brussels.
