AHLA Connections Recognizes Dave Naseman as "Pro Bono Champion"

In February 2012, Corporate Group senior counsel David M. Naseman was honored by the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA) monthly magazine, AHLA Connections, by being named to the publication's first annual class of AHLA "Pro Bono Champions." The recognition came for his legal assistance to the District of Columbia Primary Care Association in implementing its Medical Homes project to improve health care access for the poor, uninsured and underinsured residents of Washington, D.C.

According to Hoffman, “Lawyers benefit from involvement in pro bono work in many ways, which is one reason that firms with structured pro bono programmes attract high-quality recruits. Pro bono work often provides professional development opportunities for attorneys, particularly those attorneys who are in the early years of their practice.”

According to the publication, “Champion” attorneys uphold the legal industry’s professional mission of public duty. They take on community causes, fight to protect civil liberties and work for ethics in government.

Susan M. Hoffman, Crowell & Moring LLP public service partner, was a featured guest on WAMU 88.5 FM's The Kojo Nnamdi show during their broadcast on, “Public Interest Law and the Recession.” Hoffman was joined on the show by Jonathan Smith, executive director, Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia; Paul Igasaki, deputy chief executive officer, Equal Justice Works; and Matthew Pascocello, assistant director, Office of Career and Professional Development, American University's Washington College of Law. Attorneys Welcome the Opportunity to Volunteer Their Time for the Greater Good

Aryeh S. Portnoy, a counsel in Crowell & Moring’s Litigation and International and Government Litigation/Arbitration practice groups, is featured in the Washington Business Journal for his commitment to pro bono work. The article focuses on the steady increase of pro bono hours at DC law firm, due to recent commitments by firm partners to focus more on community projects. According to the Pro Bono Institute, 150 firms have reported 4.2 million hours of pro bono work this year. In 2007, the same firms did not even hit 4 million hours.

Diaper Duty

News of the Crowell & Moring Summer Associate Diaper Drive is featured in the Legal Times. The summer associates collected a total of 3,300 diapers from Crowell & Moring attorneys and staff to support the children at the Mazique Parent Child Center.




Abracadabra! Montgomery Magic Shop is Saved
April 12, 2007 — Washington Post, The Washington Times, Montgomery Gazette

Crowell & Moring Environment & Natural Resources partner Timothy McCrum is featured in the Washington Post along with his pro bono client, Barry’s Magic Shop, regarding the news that Montgomery County will help the shop relocate rather than close its doors. After operating for than 30 years, the Wheaton institution was threatened to be shut down in order to have a pedestrian walkway built in its place as part of the Wheaton Redevelopment Program. After nearly a year of negotiation and compromise, Montgomery County announced they will financially assist Barry’s Magic Shop in its relocation to south Rockville, Maryland.

January 1, 2007 — Legal Times

On December 21, 2006, Environmental & Natural Resources Group partner Tim Means received a call from the Department of Justice, informing him that President George W. Bush granted a pardon for Crowell & Moring pro bono client Phillip Emmert. Emmert, who after successfully recovering from nearly a lifetime of drug addiction, is able to return from prison to his paralyzed wife and daughter. Motivated by the need to take care of his wife and daughter, he entered a drug treatment program, became a licensed minister, and began volunteering at a hospice to console the dying.




Steve Rice – California Lawyer Pro Bono Angel
December 15, 2006 — California Lawyer

California partner Steve Rice has received one of California Lawyer’s Angel Awards, which honors outstanding pro bono lawyers in California. The editors write, "Though Rice's clients often fall outside the media spotlight, his pursuit of these smaller cases has had far-reaching ramifications." For example, in December 2006 Rice won a victory representing a group of senior citizens seeking access to financial records maintained by the company managing their retirement community.




CBS The Early Show Spotlights California Attorneys
October 20, 2006 — CBS The Early Show

CBS News correspondent Bill Whitaker reports that Sierra Intermediate School in Santa Ana California may have come up with a way to encourage kids to make good grades in a tough subject – algebra. The key, says Crowell & Moring partner R. Scott Feldmann, is cash. Feldmann, along with Crowell & Moring counsel Theresa Lopez, students and teachers, discuss the innovative math program designed by Feldmann that has produced higher scores.
